Katya Stanislavskaya is a musical theater composer/lyricist, musical director, pianist, and educator. She splits her time between New York City and North Carolina, where she is Assistant Professor/Program Director for Musical Theater at Western Carolina University. In all these locations, she lives with her husband, filmmaker Hilan Warshaw, and their son.

Katya's full-length musical RESIDENT ALIEN is the winner of the Weston New Musical Award. The only honor of its kind in the country, the Weston New Musical Award supports a high quality demo of a new work by writers and composers of notable promise, chosen from a group of national nominations. Winners rehearse their work in Vermont under professional musical direction with a cast of Broadway actor/singers, performing selections from the work on the Weston stage and in an invited concert in New York. The cast then records a free demo cd under the supervision of Kurt Deutsch of Sh-K-Boom Records. The Vermont concert of Resident Alien will be performed at the Weston Playhouse on Saturday, February 28 at 8:00pm. It is free and open to the public. For more information, please click on the logo.

Katya is starting her exciting new job as Assistant Professor/Program Director, Musical Theater at West Carolina University School of Stage & Screen.  She will be teaching courses in musical theater history, musicianship, song study, and professional development, as well as musically directing productions and other events.  Click on the link to see Katya's faculty page.

Katya composed original music for an upcoming short film commissioned by the Drama League. The film was directed by Hilan Warshaw. Music was performed by Lianne Marie Dobbs on vocals, Jay Mack on drums, Alden Terry on bass, and Katya at the piano.

Katya received the Jerry Harrington Award for Creative Achievement in Musical Theater. This award is given to members of the BMI Lehman-Engel Musical Theater Workshop.

Katya and her collaborator, playwright Kenneth Prestininzi, will have a New Dramatists' Creativity Fund workshop of their musical Tom Visits His Sister Rose One Last Time. Katya is one of the recipients of the inaugural Audrey Residency at the New Georges Theater Company.  She will be composing music for ENSLAVED, a play about human trafficking written by Saviana Stanescu and directed by Tamilla Woodard.

Katya is music directing Ars Nova's UNCHARTED: Anna K. Jacobs.  Rising composer Anna K. Jacobs plays favorites from her songbook in this evening of pop-infused contemporary musical theater. With help from her band, Jacobs will present selections from her ode to Andy Warhol, POP!, and her soulful musical, Harmony, Kansas, with help from Broadway's Alyse Alan Louis (Mamma Mia), Eric William Morris (Mamma Mia), and Brian Charles Rooney (Three Penny Opera).

Katya served as a rehearsal accompanist and pit orchestra pianist for a concert of Kander and Ebb's The Visit, benefiting the Actors Fund and Vineyard Theatre.  The concert starred Chita Rivera and John Cullum.

Katya organized, musically directed, and contributed songs to "SING OUT LOUD: A Queer-themed cabaret" at Temple University. Inspired by the recent LGBT youth suicides, the 'It Gets Better' project, and the Trevor project, the cabaret featured brand-new songs by up-and-coming composers and lyricists.
